The Canvio® Basics 3.0 external hard drive is a plug-and-play device. Like any other USB device simply plug it in and wait for the system to recognize it. Once it does you will see a new letter in the Windows system tree. To store your spreadsheets on this drive, simply do a FILE SAVE AS to the location of the drive. DONE! The next time you go to open the file, Excel will look for it on the external drive.

As with any other storage device, freeing up space will depend on the type of files and how far you are willing to go.

Deletion. Many times we save files just to save them, but never reference them again. At some point in the future it will be necessary to delete some of these files or buy more space. One method here is to check for duplicates and eliminate one of two. 50% storage gain/file. Ask yourself: "Do I really need that food photo?"

Compression. Utilities such as Winzip allow you to create a compressed version of the file(s), which you later expand if needed. The amount of space freed up will vary by the type of file compressed and you will need to leave enough space to expand the file again.

Note: with the price of storage decreasing, it begs the question: "How valuable is your time?" It may be more prudent in the long run to purchase more space rather than constantly trying to work with a drive you've outgrown.

No drives are needed for the Canvio Basics 3.0. Simply attach it to an available USB 3.0 (also backward compatible with USB 2.0) and the OS will see it and assign it a drive letter.

Question

Error message 0x8078012D when trying to back up?

I have a toshiba laptop with Windows 7, and I've just purchased a toshiba external hard drive with a 3.0 usb and a 500 gb storage. I tried to back up my laptop, but got an error message 0x8078012D. I've tried turing the windows back up service to manual and turned off my firewall, but it still fails. Any help would be appreciated.

I am not sure the product came with a user manual. The Toshiba web site managed to send me on a finding Nemo chase with no success.
