First you need an 'S' video cable. The ends are round with several little holes in it. When connecting the ends be very careful and match the little square to the plug on your video units. The sound must be connected with a seperate cable. Usually the sound will be connected using RCA cables and generally have red and white tips. Red color is usually associated with the right channel and white is the left. Hope this helps.

Make sure that the VCR indicator LED under the VCR/DVD button is lit. Also ensure that the unit is connected to the TV through the yellow RCA jacks. For more detailed information on this player, please see the owner’s manual at the following link:

Open the "Setup" menu, select "General Setting," select "Recording," select "Aspect Ratio (Video mode)," and change the aspect ratio. More information can be found in your unit’s user’s guide, specifically page 46, available at the following link:

The SD-V296KU was designed to record from DVD to VCR and not VCR to DVD. The DVD section of this unit is a Player only and does not record.

I called a Toshiba Service Tech, he said it means to press you "INPUT" button or "SOURCE" button on your TV Remote.
Next use the DVD Player Remote. See if you can us the up arrow or down arrow to control the TV screen. You should see a "DVD" screen saver moving around on the TV screen. Next select "AV" or "PC". "AV" means Audio/Visual. In other words your TV. "PC" means Personal Computer.
Next press "SETUP" on the DVD Remote and follow the setup in the owners manual on page 27.

Means to select Cable, Air(antenna), VCR, DVD or other with the output you wish to feed your unit. Can't get anything out unless you put something in.

how do I clean the heads when even the cleaning disc won't clean

Unlike a VCR which has heads that make contact with the VHS tape, a DVD does not have any heads to clean. It uses a laser assembly that does not come in contact with the disk. So using a cleaning disk is usually not an effective way to clean the lens assembly. The best way to clean the unit is to have it serviced by a qualified technician.
